Indonesia is committed to reducing its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 31.2% independently and up to 43.2% with international support by 2030, as outlined in the 2022 Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). However, a fair, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition has yet to receive adequate attention or a clear strategic roadmap to achieve these goals.
Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) are crucial elements in the energy transition process. Despite this, research, discussion forums, and implementations focusing on these issues remain limited.
Representing RUMAH PATEN, Darel Muhammad Kamil, an Energy Transition & Sustainable Projects Specialist, served as a speaker at the event titled "Towards an Inclusive Energy Transition in Indonesia." In this discussion, he emphasized that, in addition to inclusivity, building a skilled workforce is essential to meet the future demands of renewable energy expansion. “Our projections indicate that Indonesia will face a shortage of approximately 283,000 workers in the renewable energy sector by 2033,” Kamil noted. “This isn’t just about adding capacity but ensuring we have the talent to support and sustain this growth. A strategic focus on workforce development is crucial alongside our commitment to inclusivity.”
The event underscored the importance of GEDSI principles in Indonesia’s energy transition, particularly in ensuring equitable access to employment opportunities as the country advances toward its sustainability goals. Kamil urged policymakers to consider workforce development as a key pillar in the nation's renewable energy strategy, calling for targeted investments in education, training, and policies that support a diverse, inclusive workforce ready to lead Indonesia’s energy transition.
